The extras you get with Toshiba
EasyGuard™.
The features that help Toshiba’s laptops handle the pressure of business. And school.
Toshiba’s TELA laptops have a background in business. So they have many features designed specifically for demanding users who travel frequently and can tolerate no disruption. Understandably, the same features are just as valuable to teachers. They’re grouped under the umbrella name EasyGuard™ and focus on four areas, with features designed to Protect, Secure, Connect and Optimise your TELA laptop.
EasyGuard™ Protect features
3D drop and impact detection system
This unique device is based on an accelerometer – like the devices used to trigger
airbags in cars. This one’s better though, because it senses trouble before impact. And it’s sensitive to motion on three axes. If your laptop is accidentally knocked or dropped, it detects the sudden change in motion and docks the hard disk drive head. This reduces the risk of the head crashing and causing data damage.
Domed casework for the hard disk drive
To help protect your data, the hard disk drive has domed casework to protect it from crushing. Remember though, backing up is the best defence of all.
Shock protection design
Toshiba’s Shock Protection Design provides the system with higher impact protection. These technologies help to prevent everyday accidents from turning into disasters. They include a bumper mechanism that buffers components from the shock of a physical drop, and shock absorbers around the hard disk drive, the LCD and the LCD inverter (a key component controlling screen brightness). In addition, the crucial Ball Grid Array chip is fixed to the motherboard with extremely strong glue for increased resistance against shock and vibration.
Stronger display hinges
These provide increased durability and reduce the risk of breakage.

Spill-resistant keyboard*
Liquids like coffee and tea are a laptop’s worst enemy. And yet there’s always a temptation to have a cuppa while you’re tapping away. That’s why we’ve developed a system that combines seals, insulation and other physical barriers to buy you some time and help to prevent a small splash from becoming a total wipe out.
*The spill resistant keyboard concept will help safeguard the laptop from certain small volume accidental spills and allow users several minutes to close any open files and turn off the machine.
EasyGuard™ Secure features
Fingerprint Security
If the worst happens and your laptop is stolen, this technology protects your data and makes sure your files can’t be opened. Better still, it’s a real deterrent to thieves. The laptop is worthless if they can’t start it, and they can’t start it without your fingerprint (don’t worry – it still needs to be attached to you!).
Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
TPM is like a security box on your laptop’s motherboard. It’s a dedicated chip that protects highly confidential information (passwords, bank account details, pending patents, that sort of thing). TPM lets you create a Personal Secure Drive that can hold up to 2GB at a higher level of security than standard encryption. TPM is regarded as a state-of-the-art solution because it uses both software and hardware to achieve a very high level of security.
XD-Bit
The threat of attack by worms and viruses is real and omnipresent. Execute Disable
Bit (XD-Bit) prevents buffer overflow virus attacks by enabling the laptop’s processor to distinguish between bits of code that should be executed and ones that pose a threat to the system, which it blocks. Neat.
Toshiba anti-theft timer
Unfortunately, laptops are high value targets for thieves. Toshiba has developed a new system that lets you set up a timer activated BIOS password that will prevent system access in the event of theft. This acts as a deterrent by making a laptop inaccessible – and therefore worthless – to unauthorised users. It also makes sure no one gets access to your data.
EasyGuard™ Connect features
ConfigFree® Wireless radar.
This unique utility makes it easy for
non-technical users to connect to wireless networks. It includes a radar-like display that detects any nearby wireless hotspots or Bluetooth®-enabled devices. Simply select the one you want to connect to, then draw a line to make a connection.
 ConfigFree® Connectivity Doctor
This utility features a simple on-screen interface that makes it easy to identify and troubleshoot network connection problems. This is a very useful tool, because networks are essential for printing, searching the Internet and sending e-mail.
ConfigFree® Profile Settings
This utility lets you capture all of the connection settings for your home, school and anywhere else you use your laptop regularly. It remembers your default printer, your network settings, proxies and so on. Then, when you change locations, ConfigFree® switches your settings automatically – no need to re-set them each time you move.
ConfigFree® Summit.
This tool lets you create a virtual meeting room on your laptop and swap files with Toshiba-equipped colleagues in the same room or in another town (connected via the Internet). No need to print lots of hard copies! You can also chat via text. It even has a memo board for taking minutes.
Diversity Antenna
A special piece of software monitors each of two Wi-Fi antennae mounted in different parts of the lid and selects the one that has established the best wireless connection – handy in places where signal strength may be weak.
EasyGuard™ Optimise features
PC Diagnostics
One touch of a button and a window appears that will help you quickly diagnose problems. This makes it easy for technical support services to solve them.
Toshiba Presentation Button
This handy utility eliminates those awkward fumbles and pauses that can de-rail a presentation while you attempt to connect to an unfamiliar projector or external monitor. Simply press the button and you’ll be ready to present in moments – you can even set a default resolution to eliminate another potential source of .........................delays.
Power Saver
You can extend battery life by choosing from seven default profiles that alter the performance levels of components like screens, CPU, cooling, power down and so on. It’s easy to switch back to higher performance settings if you need to. And you can adjust settings in both Power Usage and Power Down modes.
Wireless on/off
A simple switch lets you turn off network functions when a wireless connection isn’t required. This helps to prolong battery life.
Fn-esse®
This simple utility lets you assign tasks to specific key stroke combinations – streamlining common tasks so you can do things like open your email or Internet Explorer by pressing a few keys.
Toshiba Optical Disk Drive On/Off Utility
This useful feature allows you to turn off the power of the integrated optical disk drive (ODD) to conserve battery life during long work sessions away from a plug.
